Here are three possibilities to consider if the copyright is valid and unexpired:
- Lend it out! The copyright owner cannot control what you do with the physical book (although she can legally control the copying of the book).
- Ask permission! Contact the publisher to find out who owns the copyright, or who should be contacted for permission to reproduce a work. It may be the original author, an agent, or the publisher, or a collective agency such as Access Copyright. You might be asked to pay a fee for making
the copy. - Or apply to the Copyright Board if you can\’t find the copyright owner at all. In Canada, you can apply to the Copyright Board for permission to reproduce the work if you cannot locate the copyright owner. The Board will set the royalty fee to be paid in exchange for permission to make copies.
